THE HIGHLANDS SCHOOL, INC.
2026–2027 ENROLLMENT AGREEMENT
This Enrollment Agreement (“Agreement”) is entered into by the undersigned parent(s) or legal guardian(s) (“Parents”) of the student named below (“Student”) and The Highlands School, Inc. (“School”) for the Student’s enrollment for the 2026–2027 Academic Year.
The undersigned represent that they are the parents or legal guardians of the Student, authorized to enter into this Agreement and financially responsible for the payment of all tuition, charges, and fees. In consideration for enrollment of the Student by the School, Parents acknowledge and agree to comply with and be bound by the terms and conditions set forth below.
Non-Refundable Enrollment Deposit
In order to reserve a place for the Student, Parents must sign and submit this Enrollment Agreement with a non-refundable Enrollment Deposit within ten (10) days of receiving this Agreement. The Enrollment Deposit will be applied to the first tuition payment.
If the School does not receive the signed Agreement and Enrollment Deposit within the time stated above, the School may revoke or reject this Agreement and release the place reserved for the Student.
Student’s enrollment for the 2026–2027 Academic Year is conditioned upon the Student’s satisfactory completion of the 2025–2026 academic year and payment of any outstanding balances due to the School for the Student and/or any other students for whom either or both Parents have financial responsibility.
The Enrollment Deposit is non-refundable, except that Parents may cancel this Agreement within fourteen (14) days of execution by providing written notice to the School, in which case the Enrollment Deposit will be refunded in full.
Tuition and Fees; Non-Payment
In consideration of the School’s enrollment of the Student, Parents agree to pay tuition for the full Academic Year (“Tuition”), plus incidental expenses and other charges including, but not limited to, supplies, field trips, hot lunch, and extracurricular activity fees (collectively, the “Fees”).
Tuition for the 2026–2027 Academic Year is as follows:
- Full Day Program (Grades 3–8): $30,750
- Full Day Program (Grades K–2): $21,250
- Half-Day Homeschool Extension Program: $15,200
These amounts are subject to the following exceptions:
(i) Parents who select the single-payment option described below;
(ii) Parents who receive financial aid, in which case tuition shall be the amount specified in the financial aid award letter; and
(iii) Parents who enroll after the start of the Academic Year, in which case tuition may be prorated at the School’s discretion.
Payments not made when due shall be subject to a late charge of 1.5% per month, compounded monthly, until paid. If any payment of Tuition or Fees is not made when due, the School may refuse to permit the Student to attend or register for classes, participate in extracurricular activities, or attend graduation, and may withhold transcripts, records, and papers to the extent permitted by law, excluding records required by law to be released, until all past-due amounts are paid.
Enrollment is for the full Academic Year. Parents remain responsible for full Tuition and Fees regardless of absence, withdrawal, dismissal, or removal of the Student, except as expressly stated in this Agreement.
Evaluation / Application Fee
Any Evaluation or Application Fee paid on behalf of the Student is in addition to Tuition and will not be credited toward the Tuition due. The Evaluation/Application Fee is non-refundable.
Tuition Payment Options
Parents must select one of the following payment options. Selection will be made at the signature line at the bottom of this Agreement.
Option I – Single Payment Plan
Tuition paid in full by April 1, 2026, by check or cash, will receive a 5% discount. Tuition paid in full by April 1, 2026, by credit card, will receive a 2% discount.
Option II – FACTS Payment Plan
Families may elect a 12-, 11-, or 10-month installment payment plan through FACTS. The 12-month plan begins June 1, 2026; the 11-month plan begins July 1, 2026; and the 10-month plan begins August 1, 2026. An annual processing fee and monthly payments are payable to FACTS.
Parents selecting this option acknowledge receipt of, or access to, the Truth in Lending Disclosure Form and agree to its terms.
Electronic Communications
Parents consent to receive all notices, invoices, billing statements, agreements, and communications from the School electronically, including via email and online platforms used by the School or its third-party service providers.
Withdrawal / Removal and Liquidated Damages
Parents understand that class size, space, staffing, and other factors limit the number of students the School may enroll for any academic year. When the School makes admission decisions, it relies on acceptances already received to determine whether an applicant will be admitted. When a student withdraws from the School, it is difficult or impossible to find a suitable replacement after the established cancellation date of May 1, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. (the “Cancellation Date”), as replacements will have accepted positions at other institutions and will be otherwise bound by the obligations of those institutions.
Subject to the loss of the non-refundable Enrollment Deposit, Parents may cancel this Agreement only by providing written notice to the Head of School, to be received by the Cancellation Date. Unless this Agreement is canceled in writing by the Cancellation Date, Parents’ obligation to pay the full year’s Tuition and Fees and any charges that may accrue is unconditional, and the School will not refund, forgive, or cancel any amounts paid or outstanding.
The School will not refund or cancel any portion of any paid or outstanding balance in the event of the absence, withdrawal, removal, or dismissal of the Student after the Cancellation Date and will not transfer any Tuition or Fees paid for the Student to another child’s student account. The obligation to pay such Tuition and Fees is not affected by whether the School finds a replacement student.
The retention of sums paid and the requirement to pay any sums outstanding shall be deemed liquidated damages, and not a penalty, and the undersigned agree that it is impractical to determine the School’s actual damages at the time of execution of this Agreement.
Dismissal of Student
Notwithstanding any statement to the contrary in this Agreement or the applicable handbook, the Head of School, in his or her sole and reasonable discretion, may dismiss or discipline a student for any reason deemed appropriate, including but not limited to failure to meet the academic or behavioral standards of the School, or conduct that interferes with the School’s program or operations or brings discredit to the School.
In the event of dismissal, the provisions regarding the unconditional obligation to pay the entire Tuition and Fees shall apply.
Student Compliance with School Policies
The terms of this Agreement are subject to the School’s policies, handbooks, and rules, including but not limited to those set forth in the Student Handbook, as amended from time to time. The School may change, alter, delete, or modify these policies without prior notice.
Parent Cooperation
A positive, collaborative, and constructive relationship between the School and the Student’s family is essential to the mission of the School. The School reserves the right to dismiss the Student or impose restrictions if Parents’ behavior, communications, or interactions—whether on campus, at School events, or through electronic or digital means—are disruptive, intimidating, overly aggressive, or demonstrate a material loss of confidence or material disagreement with the School’s decisions, policies, programs, or standards, or otherwise threaten the health, safety, or well-being of the School community.
In the event of dismissal, the provisions regarding the unconditional obligation to pay the entire Tuition and Fees shall apply.
Use of Student Likeness
Unless Parents provide written notice to the Head of School prior to the first day of attendance for the Academic Year, Parents grant the School permission, without compensation or restriction, to use the Student’s name, image, likeness, voice, and School-related work in School publications, websites, social media, and media coverage related to the School. This authorization survives the termination of this Agreement.
Use of Third-Party Online Platforms
To enhance its program, the School utilizes various third-party online platforms (“Platforms”), including during periods of on-campus and distance learning. The Platforms may collect personal information about the Student, such as name, email address, and platform username. Parents may review the School’s privacy policy and the privacy policies of the Platforms upon request.
Parents consent to the Student’s use of the Platforms and acknowledge that the School may monitor Student usage on School accounts, whether devices are owned by the School or the Student.
COVID-19 Assumption of Risk
COVID-19 is highly contagious and may spread by person-to-person contact. Despite preventative measures implemented by the School, there are inherent risks that Students and families may be exposed. By allowing the Student to attend School or School-related activities, Parents voluntarily assume these risks on behalf of themselves and the Student.
Community Health and Safety
The School reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to implement policies necessary to protect the health and safety of the School community, including modifying instructional delivery, restricting campus access, or requiring health screenings or immunizations. Parents agree to comply with such policies.
Immunizations and Communicable Diseases
Parents agree to comply with the School’s communicable disease policies, including immunization, vaccination, testing, and documentation requirements. Failure to comply may result in removal of the Student.
Cost of Participation in Court or Other Legal Proceedings
If Parents fail to make any payment when due and the School undertakes collection efforts, Parents agree to pay all related expenses, including attorneys’ fees and collection costs. If the School or its faculty or staff are required to participate in legal proceedings to which the School is not a party, Parents agree to reimburse the School for associated costs.
Force Majeure / Acts Beyond the School’s Control
In the event of any failure, delay, or modification in the School’s performance due to causes beyond its reasonable control, including acts of God, epidemic, pandemic, government restrictions, fire, war, or civil unrest, Tuition obligations shall continue and shall not be reduced due to changes in instructional format, including distance learning.
Dispute Resolution
Any dispute arising out of or relating to this Agreement shall first be submitted to non-binding mediation in Harford County, Maryland. If mediation is unsuccessful, any legal action shall be brought exclusively in the state or federal courts located in Maryland. Parents knowingly waive the right to a jury trial to the extent permitted by law.
Miscellaneous
This Agreement pertains solely to the Student’s enrollment for the 2026–2027 Academic Year and represents the entire agreement between the School and Parents. It supersedes all prior agreements or representations. This Agreement may be amended only by written addendum signed by the Head of School and Parents. It shall be governed by the laws of the State of Maryland. Invalidity of any provision shall not affect the remaining provisions. Failure to enforce any provision shall not constitute a waiver.
Signatures
By signing below, the undersigned Parents or Guardians represent that they have the authority to enter into this Agreement and agree to be jointly and severally responsible for all obligations herein. If only one Parent has sole legal custody and accepts full financial responsibility, that Parent shall be the sole responsible party.
Electronic signatures shall have the same force and effect as handwritten signatures.
